Clay questions, answered
What is the difference between air dry clay and cold porcelain clay?
Jenna Air Dry Clay is lighter and dries to a smooth matte finish. Jenna Cold Porcelain Clay dries to a satin, semi-translucent finish that looks like porcelain. Choose air dry clay for figurines, charms and décor, and cold porcelain for flowers and fine details.
Which clay is best for beginners?
Cold Porcelain Clay is the easiest starting point for flowers and decorative crafts. If you want a ready-made set, look at the Air Dry Clay Starter Kit and the Cold Porcelain Starter Kit.
Does air dry clay need baking?
No. Jenna Air Dry Clay, Cold Porcelain Clay, Sculpt & Paint Clay, Foam Clay and Terracotta Clay all harden at room temperature without an oven or kiln. Only Jenna Polymer Clay needs to be baked.
How long does cold porcelain clay take to dry?
Cold porcelain air dries in 24–72 hours. Thin pieces can be dry in 12–24 hours and thick pieces can take up to a week. Humidity and thickness both change the drying time.
Can I paint or colour the clay?
Yes. Mix Jenna Pigment Paste into the clay before shaping to colour it all the way through, or paint the finished piece with acrylic paint once it is fully dry. Acrylic paint, oil paint and pigment powders can also be kneaded in.
Which clay is best for jewellery?
Jenna Polymer Clay is the best choice for earrings, charms and pendants. It stays soft until baked, then hardens into a durable piece that can be sanded, drilled and painted. Cold Porcelain Clay also works for air-dried jewellery charms.
How do I store unused clay?
Keep it airtight. Put the clay in a resealable bag, squeeze out the air, seal it and store the bag inside a closed container. If Jenna Air Dry Clay stiffens, spray a little water on it and knead it to bring it back.
Why is my clay sticky?
Stickiness usually comes from moisture, warm hands or humid weather. Dust your hands and work surface lightly with cornstarch or talcum powder, or use a little petroleum jelly, baby oil or hand cream. Too much powder dries the clay out.
Is cold porcelain clay waterproof?
Not fully. Dry cold porcelain resists a little moisture, but water can soften or damage it. Seal finished pieces with varnish, acrylic sealer or UV resin for better protection.
How do I join clay pieces together?
Use Jenna Craft Glue while the pieces are still moist. Once the pieces are fully dry, use Jenna Instafix for a firm hold.
