How to Ensure Air-Dry Clay Creations Dry Evenly

How to Ensure Air-Dry Clay Creations Dry Evenly
• Rotate Your Piece Regularly: Turn your clay creation every few hours or at least once a day. This helps all sides get equal exposure to air, preventing warping and uneven drying.
• Elevate for Air Circulation: Place your piece on a wire rack, stand, or prop it up so air can circulate underneath as well as around the sides. This is especially helpful for thicker or larger projects.
• Use Absorbent Surfaces: Dry your clay on paper towels, newspaper, or a plaster bat. These surfaces wick away moisture from the bottom and help balance drying rates.
• Avoid Direct Heat and Sunlight: Drying too quickly from one side or with too much heat can cause cracks. Keep your clay in a well-ventilated, room-temperature spot, away from direct sun or heaters.
• Flip Flat Pieces: For flat projects, flip them over at the 24-hour mark to let the underside dry evenly with the top.
• Cover for Slow, Even Drying: For delicate or large pieces, loosely cover with plastic or a damp cloth to slow down evaporation and reduce the risk of cracks or curling.
