Air dry clay is one of our favorite materials to work with. It’s affordable, super easy to use, and best of all—there’s no baking or firing involved. But like any craft, there are some helpful tips and tricks to make the process smoother and more enjoyable.
Here’s our top 10 list of essential tips, tricks, and techniques to help you get the best results from your air dry clay projects.
What is Air Dry Clay?
Air dry clay is a natural, fine-grain clay that hardens on its own when exposed to air—no oven or kiln needed! It’s perfect for hand-built creations like pinch pots, coil bowls, trinkets, ornaments, and simple figurines. Once dry, you can easily paint or decorate your piece. It’s a fantastic option for both kids and adults alike.

2. DAS Air Dry Clay

Top 10 Tips for Working with Air Dry Clay
1. Set Up a Clean Workspace
Start with a dust-free, clean surface. To avoid sticking, use a silicone mat, baking paper, or wax paper as your base while rolling or shaping.
2. Choose the Right Tools
Basic ceramic tools are handy, but you don’t need anything fancy to begin. Things like a rolling pin, cookie cutters, kitchen knives, stamps, and even common household items can do the trick.
3. Condition Your Clay
Before starting, always knead your clay for a few minutes. This makes it soft, smooth, and easier to shape—just like warming up before a workout!
4. Handle with Care
Some clays can be stickier than others. If needed, apply a tiny bit of lotion or hand cream to your hands to prevent sticking and reduce mess.
5. Roll It Right
Avoid rolling your clay too thin—it could crack while drying. We recommend about ¼ inch thickness for strength and easy handling.
6. Smooth As You Go
Use a damp sponge or your fingertips to smooth out imperfections. If cracks appear as it dries, don’t worry! Make a quick ‘slip’ (a mix of clay and water), patch the cracks, and let it dry again.
7. Attach with Score & Slip
To securely join pieces of clay, scratch both surfaces with a tool (even a toothpick works!), apply some slip, then press them together.
8. Drying Tips
Let your piece dry naturally in the open air. Depending on thickness and humidity, it can take 24–72 hours. Flip your piece halfway through to help it dry evenly. If using a mold, wait at least 24 hours before removing it.
9. Store Leftovers Properly
Leftover clay? Don’t waste it! Wrap it tightly in cling film and store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. This keeps it soft and ready for your next project.
10. Seal Your Finished Creations
Air dry clay isn’t waterproof, but you can protect your work by sealing it. Use acrylic paints, Mod Podge (Dishwasher Safe or Triple Thick Glaze), or an acrylic sealer spray. Apply in thin layers and allow 5–6 hours between coats.
Note: Air dry clay is not food-safe. Use your creations for decoration only—not for eating or drinking!
